THE MALTZ JUPITER THEATRE'S
ANDREW KATO
HELPS BRING SUCCESS TO TONY AWARDS

Aug. 30, 2010 (Jupiter, FL) - The behind-the-scenes work of the Maltz Jupiter Theatre's artistic director, Andrew Kato, is helping to bring the Tony Awards world-class recognition.

For the seventh year in a row, Kato spent his 2010 summer vacation in New York, working as the coordinating producer on the 64th Annual Tony Awards broadcast.

And with the new arrival of two Emmy Awards for 2009 awards show, his hard work is paying off.

During the national telecast of the Primetime Emmy Awards on Aug. 29, the June 2009 broadcast of the Tony Awards on CBS won an Emmy Award in the category of Outstanding Writing for a Variety, Music or Comedy Special (Dave Boone, Writer; Special Material Written by Paul Greenberg). The broadcast was chosen above the 82nd Annual Academy Awards and The Kennedy Center Honors, among other nominees.

"Go see a Broadway show. It will change your life," said Boone as part of his acceptance speech.

A week earlier, the Tony Awards received a Primetime Emmy Award during the Creative Arts Awards portion of the Emmy ceremony, in the category of Outstanding Special Class Program. The award was bestowed on Executive Producers Ricky Kirshner and Glenn Weiss, and Host Neil Patrick Harris. The Awards were chosen over nominees that included the Vancouver 2010 Olympic Winter Games Opening Ceremony, The 82nd Annual Academy Awards and Avatar: Enter The World Of Pandora.

For Kato, the Tony Awards bring a month of working 'round the clock on the 43rd floor of the Flatotel, a contemporary high-rise in the middle of Manhattan, blocks away from Radio City Music Hall. The offices of White Cherry Entertainment, which produces the broadcast, take up the entire floor.

While there, Kirshner and Weiss tap Kato's knowledge of live theatre to help structure each segment, and Kato spends his evenings on Broadway attending performances of each nominated show to judge how he can incorporate them into the overall production. This year, he saw 16 shows in less than three weeks.

"It's an honor to be a part of such an amazing awards show that we all worked so hard on, and receiving two Emmy Awards is just icing on the cake," Kato said. "I hope to one day see a show that premieres at the Maltz Jupiter Theatre eventually make it to the Tony Awards - and I think we have a great chance with the world-premiere musical Academy, which the Theatre will showcase in December."

The 2009 Tony Awards broadcast received four nominations overall. In addition to the two wins, the broadcast was nominated for Outstanding Art Direction for Variety, Music or Nonfiction Programming and Outstanding Direction for a Variety, Music or Comedy Special (Glenn Weiss, Director).

This is the latest in a series of Emmy Awards garnered by Executive Producers Ricky Kirshner and Glenn Weiss of White Cherry Entertainment for their work on the Tony Awards. Kirshner and Weiss have acted as executive producers of the Tony Awards telecast for the past seven years - the same years that Kato has served as the coordinating producer.

LEGENDARY ACTOR ZERO MOSTEL
COMES TO LIFE ONSTAGE IN 'ZERO HOUR'

Aug. 25, 2010 (Jupiter, FL) - Actor Zero Mostel was larger than life. And he was a man of contradictions.

The Broadway star died in 1977, but he comes to life again onstage at the Maltz Jupiter Theatre in the award-winning Zero Hour, written by and starring Jim Brochu. The Theatre will present the show as a special limited engagement Oct. 14-17 and 21-24, with a discount available to season subscribers.

"We are proud to show South Florida why Jim Brochu's portrayal of this legendary star has earned so many rave reviews," said Andrew Kato, artistic director for the Maltz Jupiter Theatre.

In Zero Hour, Brochu portrays Mostel giving a no-holds-barred interview shortly before his death. In it, he talks about his detractors and his rivals, and ruminates on his meteoric career.

Fortunately for Mostel, his sense of humor saved him. And Brochu's lifelong admiration for Mostel deepened with research into the adversity Mostel faced beyond the McCarthy-era blacklist, including a harsh reaction from his Jewish parents over his marriage to a Catholic woman and a devastating leg injury he sustained in 1960 when he was struck by a New York City bus.

Mostel achieved Broadway superstardom in A Funny Thing Happened on the Way to the Forum and Fiddler on the Roof, and went on to win fame on the big screen in Mel Brooks' 1968 The Producers.

"The scenario allows us to see Mostel as the public remembers him; an outrageously larger than life figure who is continually performing and will do anything for a laugh," wrote Michael Dale in Broadway World. "It is brilliant, defiant and highly entertaining."

Like Mostel, Brooklyn-born Brochu is no stranger to fame. By the age of 13, he was working on Broadway - not as an actor, but as the seller of orange drinks at the back of the St. James Theatre during intermissions for Hello, Dolly!

After studying drama at Carnegie-Mellon University, he returned to New York, where he earned a degree in English and made his Broadway stage debut in The Taming of the Shrew.

While working as a stage actor, he appeared in two legendary television commercials - first as a dancing raisin for Post Raisin Bran and then as the "Lemon from Outer Space" with Madge the Manicurist for Palmolive. His television work includes regular stints as Father James on All My Children, Judge Julius Weyburn on The Young and The Restless, Officer Jerry Chandler on the cult-classic Mary Hartman, Mary Hartman and the befuddled bailiff on NBC's Sirota's Court with Michael Constantine. He made his motion picture debut with a small role in The Gang That Couldn't Shoot Straight opposite another newcomer, Robert De Niro.

In May, Brochu received the New York Drama Desk Award for Best Solo Performance. He also has received Helen Hayes, Carbonell and L.A. Ovations awards for Zero Hour. He also has received nominations for the Lucille Lortel and the Outer Critics Circle awards (both for Best Solo Performance of 2010).

Brochu is an active member of the Dramatists Guild, the Screen Actors Guild, Actors Equity Association and remains, as The New York Times called him, a true "Man of the Theatre." His caricature hangs on the wall of the legendary Sardi's Restaurant in New York, a singular tribute to a 40-year show business career as an actor and playwright.

But for now, Brochu's mind is on Mostel, and Zero Hour has done more than simply allow Brochu to inhabit Mostel as a character: "Sometimes he really inhabits me."

Tickets to Zero Hour are $23 (subscribers), $29 (non-subscribers). To order, call (561) 575-2223 or (800) 445-1666. To purchase tickets online, log on to www.jupitertheatre.org.

Where Art Comes to Life

2010/2011 Season Lineup

TWELVE ANGRY MEN
November 2-14

What seems like an open-and-shut murder case becomes a twisted puzzle of prejudice and intrigue. Twelve jurors are corralled in a room for the duration of their deliberation. As justice is tested and evidence weighed, the entire jury is forced to look past the show of the courtroom to unearth the shocking truth. Faced with playing the hangmen, these dozen men first must face themselves. Twelve Angry Men is a timeless masterpiece and a great examination of our judicial process.

ACADEMY
December 7-19

At St. Edward's Academy, two seniors make a harmless bet on whether they can influence an unsuspecting freshman to break a few rules to succeed. But when the transaction goes recklessly out of control, the boys become entangled in a fight for their own academic and personal survival.  Inspired by Goethe's Faust, Academy is a pop chamber musical about boys learning to become men - and remaining true to themselves.

THE SOUND OF MUSIC
January 11-30

Seven rambunctious children and the most irreverent nun ever to kick a habit, welcome your family into theirs with The Sound of Music. The final musical written by Rodgers and Hammerstein follows the Trapp family as they leave Austria to escape Nazi persecution. Featuring such musical favorites as My Favorite Things, Do, Re, Mi, Edelweiss, Climb Ev'ry Mountain and Sixteen Going on Seventeen, this heartwarming story is great for the entire family!

JOLSON AT THE WINTER GARDEN

February 22- March 13

At the beginning of the 20th century, Al Jolson was the most famous entertainer in the world - singer, dancer, actor, comedian, impresario, rebel, businessman, and star!  In this fascinating musical, Jolson at the Winter Garden, we learn about his meteoric career that was created, lost, and reborn. Combining his hit tunes such as Swanee, Toot Toot Tootsie and My Mammy, with hilarious stories and touching memories, this will be a thrilling and unforgettable night in the theatre!

CRAZY FOR YOU
March 29- April 17

Crazy for You is a high-energy musical comedy packed with mistaken identity, plot twists and fabulous dance numbers that will keep you grinning from ear to ear. Overflowing with hit Gershwin songs, including I've Got Rhythm, They Can't Take That Away From Me and Shall We Dance, this Broadway hit crosses good, old-fashioned entertainment with a feel-good message about being true to your dreams. Who could ask for anything more?

MALTZ JUPITER THEATRE, MONTBLANC

BRING PREVIEW SHOW TO

THE GARDENS MALL

Aug. 11, 2010 (Palm Beach Gardens, FL) — Through a partnership with the internationally-renowned luxury company Montblanc, the Maltz Jupiter Theatre is bringing four free preview performances of the award-winning world premiere musical Academy to The Gardens Mall.

Local families can see three of the stars of Academy perform in the mall’s center court at 12:30 p.m., 2:30 p.m. and 4:30 p.m. on Sunday, Aug. 15, and at noon on Monday, Aug. 16.

The show, which got its start in Jupiter in 2008, won several awards at last October’s New York Musical Theatre Festival (NYMF), and won the top award for Best Musical in July at South Korea’s Daegu International Musical Festival. Cast members had the honor of ringing the closing bell at NASDAQ in New York upon their return to the U.S. The show’s world premiere will take place at the Theatre in December.

“As a not-for-profit theatre serving our community, we are grateful to the internationally-renowned luxury company Montblanc for their support of live theatre,” said Tricia Trimble, managing director of the Maltz Jupiter Theatre. “Our three-year partnership has been one of collaborative support. Montblanc supported the first Emerging Artists in Musical Theatre Playwriting Series, of which Academy was a part, and their contribution helped nurture the creation, development and recognition of the award-winning show.”

After each performance, guests will be invited to visit the Montblanc boutique on the second level for an exclusive meet and greet with the performers and director of the upcoming production of Academy.

The show’s cast members are still reeling from the performances that put Academy on the map in New York and South Korea, where hundreds of fans thronged the sidewalks to meet them. Academy garnered equal praise from international media and the New York Times, who wrote that the show was “one of the most impressive of the full productions” at the NYMF festival in 2009.

Academy has also come full circle for the show’s creators, Andrew Kato, artistic director at the Maltz Jupiter Theatre (a graduate of Jupiter High School) and John Mercurio (a graduate of the Benjamin School). As youth, they wrote their first musical, Switch, which was performed on the same stage in Jupiter in 1987.
