It will be in direct competition with Man of La Mancha, the story of Miguel de Cervantes and his timeless foolhardy knight Don Quixote, which copped 10 nominations.
In all, more than 100 eligible shows opened during the 2007 calendar year. Of those, 30 productions from 13 companies received nominations.
West Palm Beach's Palm Beach Dramaworks picked up seven nominations - including three each for Trying (best play production, director Nanique Gheridian and actor Peter Haig) and Side by Side by Sondheim (director J. Barry Lewis, musical director Craig D. Ames and actor Terrell Hardcastle. Dramaworks' seventh nod went to Angie Radosh for best supporting actress in the Fourth Wall, the recently closed political comedy by A.R. Gurney.
Florida Stage of Manalapan spread its six nominations over three productions - three for historical and contemporary drama House of No Walls (best play production, director Louis Tyrrell, actress Kameshia Duncan), two for the world premiere Ginger Rogers musical Backwards in High Heels (choreographer Lynnette Barkley, supporting actress Lourelene Snedeker) and one for According to Goldman, about a screenwriting teacher and his curiously promising student (supporting actor Andrew Rasmussen.)
In only its second season, New Vista of West Boca pulled in five Carbonell nominations. Three went to its production of the Fanny Brice musical Funny Girl (actress Irene Adjan, supporting actor Christopher Kent, choreographer Rob Dawson) and two for its revival of Jacques Brel is Alive and Well and Living in Paris (actress Laura Turnbull and lighting designer Lance Blank). Boca Raton's Caldwell Theatre, which moved into a new playhouse this fall, managed only two nominations - best ensemble (Steel Magnolias) and supporting actress Pat Bowie (Doubt).
Beyond Palm Beach County, two Coral Gables companies continued to be high nomination-getters. GableStage received the most nods for any non-musical (nine), for its production of the comic and bloody The Lieutenant of Inishmore, named for best play, director (Joseph Adler) and three cast members (Todd Allen Durkin, Kim Morgan, Erik Fabregat). Actors Playhouse earned 19 nominations, including nine for Urinetown and eight for La Cage aux Folles, both of which will be competing against the Maltz Jupiter's The Boy Friend for best musical production.
