The Maltz Jupiter Theatre was the top vote getter Monday, when the Carbonell Award winners were announced at the Broward Center for the Performing Arts in Fort Lauderdale.
The awards, in their 32nd year, recognize excellence in professional theater productions presented in Palm Beach, Broward and Miami-Dade counties during 2007. The non-profit Carbonell organization handed out 30 awards - including 20 to regional theater shows and 10 to touring and independent productions.
The Maltz's awards were evenly divided between the musicals The Boy Friend and Man of La Mancha. Man of La Mancha captured prizes for best musical, best director of a musical and best lighting, and The Boy Friend scooped up awards for best choreography, best scenic and best costume design awards.
The only other Palm Beach County winner was the New Vista Theatre Company in West Boca, where Irene Adjan took home the best actress in a musical award for her role in Funny Girl.
Miami-Dade County theaters racked up the most awards, seizing nine, two more than Palm Beach County venues.
Among the road-show winners was Sally Ann Howes, a part-time West Palm Beach resident and a member of the Palm Beach Theater Guild's committee of stars. Her portrayal of Mrs. Higgins in the Broadway Across America series' version of My Fair Lady earned the best supporting actress prize.
Michael Hall, of the Caldwell Theatre Company in Boca Raton, was honored with the Ruth Foreman Award for significant contributions to the development of theater. The Caldwell opened a new building in December. Hall co-founded the 33-year-old company and serves as its artistic and managing director.
