MALTZ JUPITER THEATRE GARNERS
TWENTY-FIVE CARBONELL NOMINATIONS,
THE MOST OF THE NOMINEES IN SOUTH FLORIDA

Theatre shines at South Florida’s annual equivalent of the Tony Awards®

January 16, 2012 – The Maltz Jupiter Theatre has earned 25 nominations for the 36th annual Carbonell Awards, South Florida’s equivalent of the Tony Awards®.

The Theatre garnered the most nominations of any of the nominees, surpassing nominated theaters in Broward, Miami-Dade and Palm Beach Counties. By show, the Theatre earned nine nominations for Joseph and the Amazing Technicolor Dreamcoat, eight for Crazy For You, seven for The Sound of Music and one for Alfred Hitchcock’s The 39 Steps.

“We are honored that we are being recognized for our diverse spectrum of work – including a drama (The 39 Steps), a family production (Joseph and the Amazing Technicolor Dreamcoat) and two classic musicals (Crazy For You and The Sound of Music),” said Andrew Kato, the Theatre’s artistic director. “We are happy to be recognized for shows that have expanded our audiences.”

As in years past, the Theatre finds itself with multiple Carbonell nominations in nine categories, meaning that some of its shows are competing against one another. This leaves the theatre with double the chance of winning in different categories, with four of its five 2011 shows receiving nominations.

“It feels wonderful to have been nominated for shows in which we focused on expanding our audience base,” Kato said. “For example, our popular musical Joseph and the Amazing Technicolor Dreamcoat provided a delightful pastiche of musical styles and colorful retelling of the classic story of Joseph, and it was embraced by all ages. The show was also unique because we cast 240 local children in the show’s children’s ensemble. The Sound of Music, also, featured several children from our community.”

Director Mark Martino was one of several to earn a double Carbonell nomination: Best Director of a Musical for Crazy For You and Joseph and the Amazing Technicolor Dreamcoat and Best Choreography for Joseph and the Amazing Technicolor Dreamcoat.

“I credit much of our success to the high level of actors, directors and designers that we attract. We are grateful to the amazing artists who have chosen our Theatre as their canvas,” Kato said.

The news comes on the success of the Theatre’s popular ninth annual gala, ‘We’ve Got Elegance,’ which took place at The Breakers Palm Beach on Jan. 14. The news also comes just before the Theatre’s much-anticipated unveiling of shows for its 2012/13 season, to be announced Feb. 6 in honor of its 10th anniversary season.

“We promise that our next season of shows will continue to delight audiences with the magic of live theatre as we enter our 10th anniversary season,” Kato said. “These 25 nominations reaffirm the quality of work that we do here at the Maltz Jupiter Theatre, and we invite everyone to be a part of it.”

And the Theatre’s current season is far from over. Playing through Jan. 29 is the politically-charged musical Cabaret, while Red (Feb. 14 – 26) takes a provocative look at Abstract expressionist Mark Rothko. The smash season ends with the classic Tony Award-winning musical, Hello, Dolly! (March 13 – April 1).

Celebrating the best shows and performances in Miami-Dade, Broward and Palm Beach counties, Carbonell nominations encompass the entire length of South Florida with 13 companies receiving nods and 28 of the 68 eligible shows that opened in 2011 being recognized.

The winners will be announced at the 36th annual Carbonell Awards ceremony, to be held on April 2 at the Broward Center for the Performing Arts in Fort Lauderdale.
