MALTZ JUPITER THEATRE
SWEEPS AT CARBONELLS WITH NINE AWARDS

The Theatre wins all eight of the Carbonells in the ‘musical’ category plus one for costume design, a feat that has not been accomplished in 34 years

April 2, 2013 – The Maltz Jupiter Theatre brought home nine awards at the April 1 ceremony for the 37th annual Carbonell Awards, South Florida’s equivalent of the Tony Awards®.

With a ceremony held at the Broward Center for the Performing Arts in Fort Lauderdale, the Theatre garnered the most awards of any of the South Florida nominees, surpassing winning theaters in Broward, Miami-Dade and Palm Beach Counties.

The Theatre won all eight of the Carbonells in the ‘musical’ category, plus one for costume design – a feat that has not been accomplished in 34 years, as pointed out by The Miami Herald. By show, the Theatre earned six awards for The Music Man (including Best Musical), two for Hello, Dolly! and one for Cabaret.

“We feel so honored to accept such significant acknowledgment from our region’s theater community,” said Andrew Kato, the Theatre’s producing artistic director. “South Florida has wonderful theater companies that are producing spectacular work, and we are truly touched to receive this high level of recognition from our peers.”

The evening included performances from each of the nominees for best musical, including three from the Theatre: Kate Shindle singing “Cabaret” from Cabaret, Matt Loehr performing “Ya Got Trouble” from The Music Man and Vicki Lewis singing “Before the Parade Passes By” from Hello, Dolly!

“I credit much of the Theatre’s success to the incredible quality of performers and designers that we attract,” Kato said. “We are so grateful to the amazing artists who have chosen to work at our Theatre. Our auditions for our 2013/14 season begin this week, and we’d like to encourage even more local performers to check out our audition schedule on our website, audition for us and let their talents be known.”

For The Music Man, the Theatre’s awards included Best Production of a Musical; Best Actor in a Musical for Matt Loehr for his portrayal of leading man Professor Harold Hill; Best Musical Direction for Anne Shuttlesworth; Best Choreography for Shea Sullivan and Best Costume Design for Jose M. Rivera.

The Theatre’s production of Hello, Dolly! earned the Best Director of a Musical award for Marcia Milgrom Dodge, the Best Actress in a Musical Award for Vicki Lewis for her portrayal of Dolly Levi and the Best Supporting Actor in a Musical award for Matt Loehr for his role as Cornelius Hackl.

For Cabaret, the Best Supporting Actress in a Musical award went to South Florida theater veteran Angie Radosh for her portrayal of Fraulein Schneider.

Four of the five shows produced by the Theatre in 2012 received a total of 23 Carbonell nominations in 10 categories.

Celebrating the best shows and performances in Miami-Dade, Broward and Palm Beach counties, Carbonell nominations encompass the entire length of South Florida, with seven companies receiving awards and 35 of the shows that opened in 2012 being nominated.

Along with New York’s Drama Desk and Chicago’s Joseph Jefferson Awards, the Carbonell Awards are among the nation’s senior regional arts awards and predate others, including Washington, D.C.’s Helen Hayes Awards. The Carbonell Awards fosters the artistic growth of professional theater in South Florida by celebrating the diversity of our theater artists, providing educational scholarships and building audience appreciation and civic pride by highlighting achievements of our theater community. Named after Manuel Carbonell – an internationally-renowned sculptor who designed the original solid bronze and marble award in 1976 – each season volunteer panelists and judges choose nominees and recipients from hundreds of shows produced on stages throughout the tri-county area.

The Theatre’s 2013/14 season, Your Ticket to Great Entertainment, will feature Dial M for Murder, Annie, A Chorus Line, Other Desert Cities and The King and I. MALTZ JUPITER THEATRE

SEEKS HIGH SCHOOL STUDENTS TO PRODUCE

HAMLET

A free ‘summer intensive’ mentorship program offers one-on-one guidance

to produce the Shakespearian classic

April 2, 2013 (Jupiter) – The Maltz Jupiter Theatre is offering local high school students the chance to produce a thrilling Shakespearian drama.

Under the guidance of industry professionals at Florida’s largest award-winning professional regional theatre, the Theatre is inviting high school students to apply to be part of a free summer mentorship program to produce William Shakespeare’s Hamlet. The show will take place Saturday, August 24, and will be centrally staged “in the round” at Lighthouse ArtCenter in Tequesta.

One of Shakespeare’s most famous tragedies, Hamlet follows Prince Hamlet of Denmark as he struggles with the death of his father and a ghostly visit, then sets out on a quest for truth, justice and ultimately revenge. Hamlet’s journey reminds us all “to thine own self be true.”

“Our students will be producing a dynamic, high-energy adaptation of one of the most powerful and important dramas in the English language, as adapted by T. Scott Wooten, award-winning Florida playwright and director,” said Julie Rowe, director of education for the Theatre.

Known as the Youth Artists’ Chair, the project aligns high school students with individual Theatre staff members for one-on-one mentoring and guidance during the creation process of the show.

Applicants for the project will be interviewed and chosen by a committee.Winning students will then take on specific roles throughout the summer months that include producer, director, set designer, costume designer, lighting designer, sound designer, properties designer, stage manager, assistant stage manager, marketing, press relations, development, carpentry, run crew, wardrobe and electrics. The students will then lead three weeks of rehearsals before mounting the show on stage.

“This project is an integral part of our Theatre’s community outreach and mission statement, which is to entertain, educate and inspire our community,” said the Theatre’s producing artistic director, Andrew Kato. “We feel energized and fortunate to have this opportunity to mentor the next generation of theatre’s leaders, and we are excited to be showcasing a new adaptation of Hamlet by T. Scott Wooten.”

The deadline to apply for the project is April 15, with interviews that will take place through April 19. Submission packets are available by visiting www.jupitertheatre.org/yac.

Those chosen for the role of director and producer will also assist in casting the show’s young performers. With casting open for local students ages 13-18, open auditions for the show will be held Saturday, April 27, during the Theatre’s annual First Step to Stardom audition day at Jupiter Community Center (a day which also includes opportunities to audition for three other shows: Annie, The King and I and Through The Looking Glass).

Students interested in auditioning for Hamlet should check in by 4 p.m. and come prepared with one of Shakespeare’s sonnets; pre-registration highly recommended. Note that the show contains adult subject matter. For additional audition information, visit www.jupitertheatre.org/fsts.

MALTZ JUPITER THEATRE
BREAKS GROUND ON EXPANSION,
RECEIVES KEY TO THE CITY

Renovations to include 62 additional premium seats to create an upstairs club level lounge, as well as expanded lobby space and restrooms

April 1, 2013 (Jupiter) – The Maltz Jupiter Theatre has broken ground on its planned expansion and received a ceremonial key to the city from the Town of Jupiter.

Earlier this year, Jupiter resident and founding board member Roe Green and the Roe Green Foundation offered a compelling challenge grant of $1.5 million toward a $2.5 million capital campaign. To date, the not-for-profit Theatre has raised $800,000 of the additional $1 million needed to complete the renovations, with $200,000 remaining.

“We are beyond excited to have begun construction to improve our facilities, with renovations that are expected to be completed prior to our 2013/14 season, Your Ticket to Great Entertainment,” said Andrew Kato, the Theatre’s producing artistic director. “With attendance at 94 percent capacity this past season, our success has finally caught up to us and confirmed a positive trend at our Theatre: the need to grow.”

The Theatre plans to add 62 luxurious new seats in the existing second floor space to create an upstairs club level lounge. This second floor renovation will include a private entrance, glass elevator, expanded lobby, bar and restrooms, all adjacent to the 62 new seats. Additional executive offices will also be added to this floor, bringing the majority of the hard-working staff together. The Theatre also plans to expand and upgrade the downstairs lobby, increase restroom capacity and add a much-needed standalone family restroom.

“The addition of 62 seats in our Theatre will mean more than 7,000 additional seats per season, and it has the potential to add more than $350,000 in earned revenue each year,” said Tricia Trimble, the Theatre’s managing director. “We are almost there, and just need to raise the additional $200,000 to complete the Theatre’s renovations this summer.”

At the Theatre’s annual volunteer appreciation event last week, Jupiter Mayor Karen Golonka presented the Theatre with a ceremonial “key to the city” on behalf of the Town of Jupiter, commemorating the Theatre’s 10th Anniversary Season. This honor follows a proclamation by the town in February of “Maltz Jupiter Theatre Week,” which recognized the Theatre’s cultural contribution to the Jupiter community and extended gratitude to the Theatre’s volunteers, board members, donors, students, staff and patrons.

“Congratulations on a wonderful 10th Anniversary of the Maltz Jupiter Theatre! It is a testimony to the strength of will, perseverance and creativity of all who work and volunteer at the Theatre,” Mayor Golonka said. “The Maltz Jupiter Theatre has become a much-loved institution and is indeed a ‘jewel of Jupiter’ that continues to lift our spirits and challenge our imagination.”

“It’s been said that the arts – such as the Maltz Jupiter Theatre – challenge our imagination and lift our spirits. A community without the arts is a community that has lost its soul and its opportunity to experience beauty and wonder,” she continued. “We are so grateful for the vision and generosity of those like Roe Green and Milton and Tamar Maltz that have helped lead this Theatre to greatness.”

Construction is expected to be complete in early October. The Theatre’s staff members are currently working throughout the summer in office space next to the Theatre in Reynolds Plaza. The Theatre building is currently closed, but the Conservatory is open for summer camp and the box office is available by phone and online.

Tickets are now on sale now for the rest of the theatre’s 10th Anniversary season, and subscriptions are currently on sale for the Theatre’s 2013/14 season, Your Ticket to Great Entertainment. For a complete schedule and tickets, call (561) 575-2223 or visit www.jupitertheatre.org.

MALTZ JUPITER THEATRE

INVITES LOCAL PERFORMERS

TO AUDITION FOR NEXT SEASON

March 20, 2013 (Jupiter) – Every hit stage show begins with auditions, and the Maltz Jupiter Theatre is encouraging local professional performers to try out.

The first of the Theatre’s auditions for the shows in its 2013/14 season, Your Ticket to Great Entertainment, will take place in Jupiter on Thursday, April 4, for Dial M For Murder (Oct. 27 – Nov. 10, 2013). Performers are asked to be ready to read passages from the script. They should bring a headshot and résumé.

Other upcoming auditions in Jupiter include auditions for all of the other shows in the Theatre’s 2013/14 season, including Annie (Dec. 3 – 22), A Chorus Line (Jan. 14 – Feb. 2), Other Desert Cities (Feb. 16 – March 2) and The King and I (March 18 – April 6).

As the largest regional theatre in Florida, the Theatre is one of the area’s top employers of both onstage and backstage talent, including directors, choreographers, designers, musicians, performers and stage crew. To cast its professional shows, the Theatre draws from a national and local talent pool. Of 85 stage roles needed during the 2012/13 season, 26 performers were from Florida, including the all-local cast of the February drama Doubt: A Parable. The remaining 59 performers were from New York and elsewhere.

“People have the misconception that talent can only be found in New York or other big cities – but talent exists everywhere,” said Andrew Kato, the Theatre’s producing artistic director. “We’d like to encourage local performers to read the casting information on the Theatre’s website, find a role that interests them, make an appointment, show up to auditions and let their talents be known. Our first priority is to employ talented actors from this area.”

Between 400 and 700 people typically audition in New York for each of the Theatre’s large-scale musicals, and as many as 250 people audition for its plays. However, the Theatre’s leaders always give strong consideration to local performers due to their desire to support local talent. There are also financial incentives to hiring locally, since the Theatre is required to offer housing to any union performer outside a 50-mile radius. All directors are present at call-backs.

“There are so many opportunities to be seen at our Theatre,” said Rachel Blavatnik, the Theatre’s associate producer who coordinates casting. “Just like on Broadway, we follow Actors’ Equity Association (AEA) union requirements and host Equity Principal Auditions (EPAs), or union open calls. However, non-union actors can also attend these auditions and wait in line to be seen. Performers who are members of the union are encouraged to make an appointment.”

Since the Theatre is also required to hold EPAs in two major cities outside of South Florida, auditions for the Theatre’s season shows also take place in Orlando and New York City. The Theatre is also a member of the Florida Professional Theatres Association (FPTA), which holds state-wide auditions every summer – this year in Sarasota. Blavatnik attends each year.

“The opportunities abound each year, from comedy and drama to big, splashy musicals,” Blavatnik said. “The needs are often very specific to the particular shows we are doing. This season, we have two large-scale musicals, a dance musical, a suspense-filled mystery and a new, Tony-nominated drama. There’s great opportunity for all types of talented performers.”

The Theatre’s New York musical auditions often take place over five days, including a day for an open casting call, two days for agent submissions, a day for dance calls and a day for callbacks.

Student auditions will be held on Saturday, April 27, from 11 a.m. to 6 p.m., with the Theatre’s annual First Step to Stardom audition day at Jupiter Community Center, with roles for dozens of students (ages 5 – 18). The day will feature casting for the family favorite musicals Annie and The King and I, the new musical Through the Looking Glass and a Shakespearian classic produced through the Theatre’s high school mentorship program: Hamlet. Registration is recommended.

Full details of all of the Theatre’s casting sessions can be found by visiting www.jupitertheatre.organd clicking on the “auditions and submissions” tab at the bottom of page. First Step to Stardom audition information can be found by clicking on the “First Step to Stardom” tab.
