After more than 60 years in the business, Shelley Berman hasn’t lost his sense of humor
The irrepressible actor/comedian brings his substantial talents to Jupiter
WEST PALM BEACH — Comedian Shelley Berman, star of stage, screen (big and small), night clubs, LPs and CDs, is still making audiences laugh more than 60 years after the curtain rose on his first performance. The JCC of the Greater Palm Beaches and The Maltz Jupiter Theatre are presenting Berman in concert Thursday, March 20 at The Maltz Jupiter Theatre.
While Berman’s show business career began in the late ‘40s, he began developing his unique brand of comedy--employing an imaginary telephone to take the place of an onstage partner--while watching the legendary Mort Sahl perform in 1957. He realized then that he didn't have to be a traditional joke teller.
He went on to success as a stand up comedian, comic recording artist, author, and Broadway, film and TV actor. His TV appearances go as far back as the “The Mary Tyler Moore Show,” and “The Man from U.N.C.L.E.,” and have continued to this day with appearances on hit programs such as “Friends,” “Arli$$,” “The King of Queens,” “The Bernie Mac Show,” “Grey’s Anatomy,” and “Entourage,” among others. Since 2002, he has appeared as Nat David (Larry David's father) in HBO's “Curb Your Enthusiasm,” which, largely improvised by cast members, has given him the opportunity to return to his ‘improv’ roots. Currently, Berman can be seen on “Boston Legal” in the hilarious role of semi-senile Judge Robert Sanders.
Berman also continues to do films. He has a role in the Adam Sandler film “You Don’t Mess with Zohan,” and is the voice of Ira the turtle in the animated feature, “The Legend of Secret Pass,” both scheduled for release later this year. He also headlines in Las Vegas several times a year. Aside from recording more than half a dozen comedy albums, Berman has authored three books, two plays and several TV pilot scripts.
For more than twenty years, he’s taught humor writing in the Master of Professional Writing program at USC, where he is now a Lecturer Emeritus. Shelley spends his (precious little) free time volunteering for various charitable organizations, and indulging in his favorite hobby, knife collecting.
Don’t miss one of the legends of comedy in the intimate setting of the Maltz Jupiter Theatre, showtime is 7:30 pm. Tickets are $35. Tickets are available at the Maltz Jupiter Theatre Box Office, online at www.jupitertheatre.org or by phone 561-575-2223 or 800-445-1666. The Maltz Jupiter Theatre opened in February 2004 as a 550-seat, nonprofit community-based regional theater in the former Burt Reynolds Dinner Theatre. The theater is a member of the prestigious League of Resident Theatres. The Maltz Jupiter Theatre is located at 1001 E. Indiantown Road and State Road A1A in Jupiter.
