





Technical Director
The Technical Director supports the vision and goals of Maltz Jupiter Theatre through effective and seamless management of all scenic and technical elements including the daily operation of the Maltz Jupiter Theatre Production Center, overseeing a staff of carpenters, welders, and painters. In collaboration with the Director of Production, the Technical Director oversees the technical operations of the Theatre and facilitates the load in and tech process for MJT productions and events.
This role is an integral part of the Production Department, reporting to the Director of Production, and works closely with a dynamic team including: Lighting Supervisor, Sound Engineer, Prop Manager, Assistant Production Manager, and guest designers.
Qualifications:
- A degree in technical theatre or equivalent work experience, minimum of 5 years experience in technical theatre
- Proficient in AutoCAD and Vectorworks, 3D capabilities a plus
- Advance knowledge of scenic construction techniques including carpentry, welding, rigging, and automation
- Strong computer and research skills with specific knowledge of Microsoft Suite.
- Excellent interpersonal, communication and leadership skills, with a positive attitude and the ability to foster a team environment with a variety of experience levels
- Advanced organizational, time management and problem-solving skills, ability to meet deadlines and manage changing priorities.
At the Maltz Jupiter Theatre Production Center, the Technical Director manages the planning, construction, painting, transportation, installation, repairs, and strike of show scenery, which includes:
- Overseeing safe and responsible construction techniques and implementing all safety protocols in a clean and positive environment.
- Ensuring that set designs are executed according to the needs of the scenic designers, within budget and departmental timelines
- Creates technical drawings for the construction of scenic elements and in conjunction with other management staff, manages build schedules and ensures timely execution of all builds.
- Supervises and assists with set and stage construction and special projects as needed
- Coordinating paint schedules and needs with the Scenic Charge Artist; ensuring the quality of sets given to painters
- Coordinating shop needs, equipment maintenance and service requests with the Director of Production and the Operations department
- Creates efficient load in and strike plans and oversees the safe and timely install and strike of all productions
- Providing support during tech rehearsals, identifying solutions to challenges and changes during the tech process
- Track and report scenic expenses, submit timesheets and payroll, and follow other Accounting Department guidelines
The Technical Director works with the entire Production Department to ensure that productions, Limited Engagements, and other special projects are properly planned, designed, built, and executed to the highest quality, which includes:
- Coordinating with the Director of Production to determine show/project needs, budgets, schedules, and concerns
- Providing weekly updates to the Director of Production and the Producing Artistic Director/Chief Executive on build progress
- Consulting with show designers on production budgets and schedules; contributing to understanding of the Theatre’s technical assets, scheduling constraints, access to materials, etc.
- Analyzing preliminary production designs for budget, schedule, and materials needs; executing technical construction drawings for Production Center team
- Coordinating with Stage Managers for rehearsal needs and supplies, and coordinating moves of materials, sets, and props from rehearsal hall to stage for technical rehearsals and load ins
- Coordinating with the Lighting Supervisor for construction needs and installs of electrics into set pieces
- Coordinating with the Assistant Production Manager to furnish needs for Limited Engagements and Special Events, and identify any conflicts with season productions
Pay: $65,000-$72,000 annually, negotiable based on previous experience. Full-time, year-round with comprehensive benefit package. Rehousing assistance available.
